Cane Run Estate Original Rum 750mL

I wish this was called Cane Run Sugar Cane Rum just for the wordplay alone. In short though we have a non-gimmicky fairly standard white rum that does not do much to not fade into the background of where it sits on a store shelf. Not that we take issue with that – some of our favorites barely standout, and the few with pizzazz are often left wanting in other areas.

Sadly that is not the case here, and while the value for a Rum and Coke is well worth the purchase for me, this has too much of a burn and sweetness combo while not bothering to excel at even one of it’s faults. We are then left with a rather middling if not subpar rum.

What they Say: “Cane Run Estate Original Rum is a tribute to the long and vibrant history of rum.

The distilled essence of sugar cane, rum was first enjoyed by swaggering pirates and British sailors in the Caribbean in the 17th Century.  Back then it was a rough tasting spirit, despite its sugar cane base.

We at Cane Run have crafted our modern spirit to capture the hearty flavor that is the very essence of rum’s heritage, but with a soft and mellow smoothness that belies rum’s storied past.

Its balance makes it the ideal rum for classic and modern rum drinks alike.  Bottoms up!”

Taste: 5.0 – Initially there’s almost nothing really, and for a light rum that’s fine by me.

Aftertaste: 3.0 – However combined with the burn and rising sweetness – there is still a terrible aftertaste.

Burn/Smooth: 2.5 – Oh yeah that has a burn like if you were drinking nail polish. The sweetness cuts it a bit, but not much.

Aroma: 3.0 – It doesn’t have a very strong or complex smell, but it is otherwise annoyingly sweet.

Honesty: 5.0 – Ahh hiding your inadequacies of bad taste as a comprimse of modern techniques and yet tributes to the old heritage. Listen if this was good I could nearly buy that, but point of fact is that they lie. If you just kept to your heritage without trying to say things like ‘bottoms up’ you could do well here, but whatever you gain is lost by the same sword.

Mixability: 6.5

Rum and Coke: 8.0 – For a white/silver rum that is a surprisingly good rum and coke. It lacks a spice that others may have, but with any faults gone and the right amount of sweetness this has found a home.

Faux Mojito: 5.0 – It’s okay here as far as fake/easy mojitos go.

Value: 6.0 – I was going to give this a ‘paid-what-you-get’ score, but that Rum and Coke has changed my mind, sure this is not a super deal, and there are other white rums at this price point that can serve you better.

Final Thoughts: If handles of this were offered it might beat out my current decanter favorite (Don Q), but since I don’t see it being sold as such it will join the ranks of rums past.

  1. This is the worst so called rum that I have ever tasted. I would take it back to the store, but they don’t take returns even if I didn’t want a refund just dispose of as a hazardous chemical.

    1. Yep. It is a terrible rum. I tried it because I don’t like Bacardi. I usually drink Palo Viejo but this one is bad. I thought it would be sweet because of the name. It tastes like pure rubbing alcohol.

  2. This is a crap vodka sold as a crap rum. It’s bland, lifeless, harsh, flavorless, weak, pathetic and basically low rent swill.

  3. I like this rum and the 750 ml bottle is less than 10 bucks around me. But then again I almost exclusively is it for rum and cokes. And my wife uses Diet Coke!
I think what a lot of people Miss is the fact that this is actually aged rum and then run through a filter to take out the gold color typical of a rum that has spent 5 years in a Oak Barrel..

  4. I found this rum about 8 months ago and have to say it is a very good mixing rum at a good price!
it does not have that nasty rubbing alcohol taste you normally get with a cheaper rum or vodka. I attribute that to the cane sugar base. It beats Bacardi hands down for a good standard rum and coke!

  5. Hi…so whats the best way to make 2 litres of rum…from 60ml of the essence..thx all Mr Bananna.
