Cantinero Orendain Reposado Tequila 750mL

It’s a bit unfortunate when something doesn’t taste like it smells. This comes up often in spiced rums smelling like a delicious bevy of spices only to taste like sugar – but sadly it’s true here as well. On the whole a tequila that has some smoky aspects to it without it being an Anejo and mellowed out sounds enticing. However the result here is a more on the palm sugary side and is above all – middle of the road. Mixed or straight it simply just does nothing great.

If there’s something this Tequila does right it’s mostly that they’ve chosen not to brag about themselves. That and not costing so much that you actually grow angry by having to pay for what is essentially a forgettable and average reposado.

What they Say: “” (nothing)

Taste: 5.0 – It’s like palm sugar and agave had a baby and it’s in your mouth now. Really it’s all about that sweetness and those flavors; however that doesn’t mean it tastes good.

Aftertaste: 5.0 – It really just carries on from the taste – it mellows more into agave as it goes, but it’s not exactly tasty.

Burn/Smooth: 4.0 – It’s not smooth, but it’s also not as harsh as it could be. Like there is very much a moment where you are like ‘OH RIGHT, tequila’ but it’s not so drastic or caustic to offend horribly.

Aroma: 7.5 – It’s weird to say this, but it smells vaguely like a Mexican restaurant. The agave is there, but it’s also a bit smoky and almost BBQ. Digging in you lose some of that smoke, but it’s otherwise just really good.

Honesty: 7.0 – No literature to go off of, so at least there’s no lies about quality being anything other than mediocre. The design is solid though so what few points they earn are well kept.

Mixability: 5.0

W/ Rocks: 5.0 – It adds more of an agave ‘bite’ to it’s taste. With that in mind it sort of improves things, but it’s still kind of wrong. It’s better on rocks than neat, but not a good rocks tequila is the punchline.

Margarita: 5.0 – You certainly get that agave and sugary flavor into your margarita, which actually highlights how much better it is fresh compared to mix (we use mix for reviews for consistency). Overall it’s okay though, nothing out of the park.

Value: 5.0 – Price wise it’d be fair to say that’s on point. It’s not exactly a deal buster, but for the fairly average product you get – only paying that much isn’t so bad.

Final Thoughts: Like we’ve said above there thankfully isn’t anything inherently wrong or bad here. It’s basically tequila brand tequila. It’s not going to blow your socks off, but it also isn’t going to burn your nose hairs either. If you have 16 dollars and need to get some tequila you won’t be going wrong here, but then again there’s also much better options available to you. For a similar price to this we’d suggest El Charro as at least that mixes well and tastes good.
