Cincoro Blanco Tequila 750mL

There are many things that are considered ‘top-shelf’ and are placed there accordingly. This given it’s height (just under 18 inches) sort of demands to be top-shelf, like a “just try to figure out how I don’t go into overhead empty space”. That being said it sort of actually deserves to be there, because giant curved angle modern art bottle aside – the contents within are truly top-shelf as well.

Fun Fact: Looking at the air bubble in the topper made us wonder if it could be a hidden shot glass (given they hid a coaster in the box). While inconclusive we found out one of the 4 co-founders of this was actually Michael Jordan which isn’t too surprising given the rate of celebrities in the spirit game now, but neat. Anyway onto their literature.

What they Say: “Cincoro began with a mission to create the world’s finest tequila.

Our process is unique. We start by hand-selecting the highest quality 100% Weber blue agave from both the highland and lowland regions of Jalisco, Mexico. We cook and distill these two distinct tequilas in separate batches before artfully blending them together.

This is the heart of Cincoro, an exceptionally delicious tequila with beautiful notes of fresh agave, citrus and a hint of vanilla.

Our award-winning blanco is incredibly smooth to sip neat, savor on the rocks, or share in a cocktail with good friends and family.”

Taste: 8.0 – You get that nice hit of citrus and agave that fulfills the promise of the smell in your nose. It’s not wildly mind-blowing, but that’s more the domain of the aftertaste and burn which kicks in rather shortly.

Aftertaste: 6.0 – It ratchets up the power of the agave in tune with the burn that this brings – the effect means you lose any subtlety and can’t just enjoy the flavor, but it does make one wonder about the rocks situation.

Burn/Smooth: 7.0 – It’s interesting – because while it does burn it at first feels harsher but that’s because coming from everything else you sort of expected it to be smoother. Objectively though for a blanco this is actually rather smooth – though not ‘incredible’

Aroma: 9.0 – This smells fantastic. It’s super clean, there’s the agave and the citrus playing nice together and who knows maybe there is that hint of vanilla. The short fact is though this smells great to drink.

Honesty: 5.5 – Is it a bit wanky? Yes. Overall though it’s sort of not lying. Oh sure there’s ‘beautiful notes’ and ‘hints of vanilla’ but it could have been far worse. The design alone though is so striking and pleasant that it makes up for some of the crimes. Mostly though it’s being nearly on the mark with smell and smoothness if not totally there.

Mixability: 8.17

W/ Rocks: 8.0 – So that certainly cuts the burn down from a bobcat to a tomcat – which is welcome; however you do get more of that agave throughout instead of the nicer harmony with the citrus and other flavors. Still though not many blancos you can enjoy sipping like this.

Tequila Sunrise: 7.5 – You do still get some of that citrus and agave here. It’s also very clean, with little lingering. Of the 3 it’s the worst, but still better than most tequila cocktails.

Margarita: 9.0 – Yeah, of course it does well here. That bit of agave kick flavor shines in the margarita, but doesn’t overpower it. We always use a margarita mix here for consistencies sake, but fresh? Oh this should be a delight.

Value: 6.0 – We got this for 2 bucks cheaper (nice), but overall that doesn’t change too much. Is it pricey? Yes. Do you get what you paid for? Oh god yes. Honestly if you are wanting a sipping tequila that’s not come from a barrel or you want one of the nicer margaritas on this planet – 71 dollars isn’t really bad value.

Final Thoughts: We got this as part of the run up to Cinco de Mayo, and honestly we’re a bit worried after the 5th there won’t be any of this left. It’s easier to justify a price tag like that when doing reviews, but for margaritas this summer – damn if it’s a nail biter decision to get Cincoro. Maybe we should check if there’s a reposado….
