Finally the trio is completed, and according to a minor argument we had with a friend of the site – it’s about damn time. They’d made it abundantly clear to us that for Espolón – the Reposado was okay, and the Anejo wasn’t worth the time or additional funds (agreed) – the Blanco was where the real action is at. Well call us crow eaters because they were entirely correct.
Now we will state that overall most of El Espolón isn’t exactly the best at mixing (aside from the anejo adding some character to a margarita), but this one is just nice to sip on it’s own. If you’re the sort of person looking to do tequila shots with the gang once we hit peak-vaccine – get this.
What they Say: “Handcrafted in Los Altos, the highlands region of Jalisco, El Espolón reveals the essence of Mexico. At its core is the spirit of the iconic rooster, a symbol synonymous with Mexico’s proud history. Our tequila is a tribute to the Mexican artists who inspired the world with their true portrayals of the rich, storied culture of Mexico. El Espolon takes you to where people celebrate everyday life – it pours you into the heart of real Mexico.”
Taste: 6.5 – It’s nice, bit of sweet, bit of agave – and overall just pleasant.
Aftertaste: 7.5 – Here it nicely lingers for a good while, the flavor is a bit muted aside from a little pop of power.
Burn/Smooth: 8.5 – We’ve reviewed as mentioned the reposado and anejo and this is somehow SMOOTHER?? How did you make aging it add burn? Honestly there’s like a sparkler of fire with the aftertaste, but this is otherwise glass.
Aroma: 7.0 – Not complex – it’s basically the singular note of agave tequila that you want. There’s just a whiff of some burning pain, but barely enough to knock it.
Honesty: 8.5 – Again – love the art and paying their artists. This particular one though of a skeleton riding a chicken into battle earns stupid points, and as usual they do little to detract.
Mixability: 5.5
Tequila Sunrise: 5.5 – Disappears into the OJ. Little to no flavor of the tequila unless you over-adjust which is fine – but eh.
Margarita: 5.5 – Sadly it’s just a bit too subtle, when adjusted though it works out fine enough.
Value: 8.0 – it’s the same price as the Reposado, but by our marks – so much better. While it’s not good mixed unless you are making some strong cocktails – just having it neat is nice enough. It’s rare we get to actually recommend a sipping tequila – rarer still for it to not break the bank.

Final Thoughts: We can also confirm that this tequila is dangerous, as we mentioned above sadly some of the flavor gets lost in the normal amounts in cocktails, but if you wanted to say ‘up the tequila’ it does improve them at the cost of your liver and a headache the following day if you’re not careful. Overall though if you are looking for some tequila to have on it’s own in this economy – don’t do like we did and sleep on this.
