It’s Wednesday which means it’s time for another bear review – this time a little more in-depth than previous weeks. Today’s bear is the Kodiak – a truly majestic creature. Not to be confused with the more common brown bear – Kodiak bears are the second largest bear species (second only to polar bears) and only like on the Kodiak Archipelago islands off of Alaska.
Now while we’ve complained in recent weeks about bear-related issues – take notice was that we felt that was not authentic. This however was 100% authentic (and honest) Kodiak bear, and while there’s some issues we have with smell and price – the overall product is great. Best of all there’s a special experience in getting a bear for a meal, it’s like the first time you go to your grandpa’s island and hunt the most dangerous game.
What they Say: “(Bear noises) Translated: Raw raw raw imma bear.”
Taste: 6.5 – We were lucky to get out bear having eaten more berries than fish (as sometimes the fish oil/fat really can affect the flavor.) so it was quite good.
Aftertaste: 4.5 – There was still a twinge of the fish though which lingered.
Burn/Smooth: 3.0 – Sadly to prevent parasites kodiak and all bears need to be cooked very well done – so this does not go down smoothly.
Aroma: 5.0 – The smell of bear meat is – well let’s just say it’s not pleasant. However compared to other bears this wasn’t as bad.
Manliness: 10.0 – While bears are not men (except the male ones) bears are very manly, and are often used in manly things as a visual metaphor.
Mixability: 8.0
W/ Cage Match: 8.0 – We highly recommend using Kodiak bears in your cage match fights.
Value: 2.0 – Because you don’t typically find bear in store this is quite pricey to get a hold of.

Final Thoughts: Overall I would say that if you are looking for a bear – you should stick with a typical brown or black bear, and if you’re adventurous get a polar bear. However a Kodiak is certainly a specialty, and worth getting once in your life.
