Allagash North Sky Stout

North Sky: 5.5 – The roasted barley and cocoa are heavy here. The aftertaste though has more of an almost fruit like component which doesn’t totally work, but it’s certainly got some character. We’re big fans of the Allagash, but to be honest the stout isn’t exactly a superb thing to drink, and coming from them expectations were high, but it’s mostly just – okay.

Price Average: $3

Monkey Head Vodka 750mL

It’s odd for this review to exist, because ultimately it doesn’t matter too much how the vodka inside this tastes. You wanted some monkey shot glasses and figure, well some vodka to go with it is just fine too. We could say that it’s a bit pricy for a gimmick, and that unfortunately the vodka is pretty poor – but really that doesn’t matter, it’s not going to stop people from giving them money – ahh well.

Brooklyn ‘The Stonewall Inn’ Session IPA

The Stonewall Inn: 5.0 – The mixed pack came with an IPA and given it’s heritage via name it felt cruel to not even give it a review. As far as IPAs go it’s mercifully not super bitter at all. Oh sure you know it’s an IPA and not just a pale, but it could have been much worse – it’s simply too mild and needs a kick of something. Do as we do and add a bit of lemonade and it’s a peach.

Price Average: $20 for mixed 12-pack

Dewar’s Blended Scotch Whisky Ilegal Smooth 8yr Mezcal Cask Finish 750mL

Editor’s Note: Fuck that was a hell of a week, anyway.

We have sort of a complicated relationship with Dewar’s – on the one hand we prefer Famous Grouse or just a Glenlivet 12 Yr for a mixing/well scotch. (we really should review those) That’s not to say the white label hasn’t occasionally showed up in the bar. The 12 year Dewar’s is thankfully a bit better, but given the length of age one would expect that. This though – this was unexpected, and quite frankly much better than it had any right to be.

Ultimat Vodka 750mL

Alright new year, and it’s sure to be a whole heap better than before [this claim is disputed]. We’ll start with a vodka that claims to be the ‘ultimate’, and it’s already gone to nail polish remover in a bucket. We have a decent backlog going and literally picked at random what the first of the year would be, and of course it’s an overselling, overpriced, piece of shit vodka – because while we paused reviews for a while – nothing every actually changes.

Reviews to Return Jan 2021

This year sucked. For various reasons we stopped reviews back in March, and you can take your pick of not going out, harder to justify financially purchases of random stuff, the moral implications of promoting drinking at this time when it’s likely becoming a problem for folks or just overall lack of motivation.

Reviews will resume starting in the new year. The schedule will not be the same. At least until we hit vaccination threshold reviews will be as follows.

  • Monday – Spirits, but whiskey is now merged back, don’t worry we’ll make sure to not have a streak.
  • Thursday – Beer review (only 1 a week instead of 2)
  • Last Sunday of the Month – Wine – sorry but there’s clearly no wine tasting so it comes down to bottles.

Cheers Y’all, have a Happy Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Candlenights, and more.
