We are suckers for a good creamy flavored vodka. (and to all of you who thought about that whipped cream vodka please seek help). No we mean a vodka that doesn’t feel clean or wheat-y, but creamy making it a prime candidate for one of our favorite drinks – a white Russian. This, however, is a double-edged sword because by virtue of not being ‘pure’ and ‘clean’ it’s possible this fails elsewhere.
Steel Dust manages to mostly avoid these pitfalls, and aside from charcoal like flavoring which hurts it – it’s overall an above-average success story. Pushing it over the edge is the merciful price point being in that sub-15 range making it a damn good buy.
What they say: “Crafted with locally-grown Texas corn and distilled to perfection using small batch pot stills. Learn more about the legend of Steel Dust at steeldustvodka.com”
Taste: 6.0 – Like the aroma it’s creamy. It’s actually quite nice.
Aftertaste: 4.5 – The tail end gets a far too much charcoal flavored. Overall it’s not the worst vodka, but is certainly a black mark.
Burn/Smooth: 6.0 – There is certainly a burn here. However much like the taste and aftertaste – it’s not stellar, nor swill. Merely above par.
Aroma: 6.0 – It’s a bit creamy in aroma, but there is a bad aspect to this that’s not great. However, it’s not the worst smelling vodka in existence.
Honesty: 5.5 – It’s a bit tacky to have the website as part of the text, but we took its advice. There’s not much there about the vodka, and therefore little to fault on – but what is the legend of steel dust anyway? It’s the name of a horse. Whelp.
Mixability: 5.67
Russian: 7.0 – It’s creamy and delicious. There is so little wrong to say about it, and while it’s not the best Russian, it’s a damn good one.
Screwdriver: 6.0 – An okay screwdriver, and thankfully the creamy aspect doesn’t take from the juice’s flavor.
Tonic: 4.0 – That’s barely there at all. The tonic and the vodka almost seems to cancel out turning the product nearly tasteless with some bubbles.
Value: 7.0 – Because that can mix quite well in the right situations, and because it’s the right range of cheap vodka’s this a contender against the things like Three Olives and Wodka.

Final Thoughts: For our purposes in the lounge the Three Olives will likely still remain supreme given how well it mixes, and the fact that handle price is often ~20 dollars, this though if on sale or a good handle deal makes a fine contender – and there’s nothing wrong with being a contender in the vodka space.
I drink straight up, chilled, and I am totally impressed – Wanna talk with the craft – Throughly impressed!!
