Sometimes it’s been a hell of a week so you decide – fuck it, let’s splurge and buy an over 80 dollar bourbon just to feel things. However while for the most part Scotches are fairly stable at that price range, with bourbon you really are making a shot in the dark. All to often everything is priced wildly with some things being far less or too much with no barometer to help you. What then of this expression with it’s barrel shaped bottle and Wegmans pedigree? (Yes because of the single barrel labeling this actually says Wegmans on it which is hilarious) Oh right, the result – well it’s mixed.

Agitator Kentucky Bourbon Finished in Red Wine Barrels Whiskey 750mL
Aging whiskey in red wine barrels isn’t as common compared to beers, or even to sherry casking, but as we’ve seen before with Blood Oak, the effect is solid enough that more should give it a shot. Luckily Agitator makes wine, so them doing this makes – well a lot of sense. The question though is whether this soak in an old barrel has done anything to improve the whiskey, or just made it a slight shade of red.
Puncher’s Chance Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750mL
Yes you read that correctly, this is a bourbon – not a rum. Though you’d be forgiven for thinking so. And while it may have a sweetness that compares to a rum as well, it very much wears it’s bourbon colors in flavor. We of course intend the pun here, but if you are looking for a decent bourbon you might want to give this a chance.
Winchester Kentucky Rye Whiskey 750mL
Now we know two things in regards to Winchester. The first being they made the Winchester rifle, the gun of the American West. We also know of the Winchester House, home of Sarah Winchester which is very haunted and weird. (What we like ghost stories even if they aren’t real). Now something we don’t know of is the ‘Winchester Cowboy’ or “Winchester Whiskey’ and yet here we have the name of the famous brand on this Rye – but why?
Zackariah Harris Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750mL
Yes, that is Zack with a k, not an h. Now we bought this because Chelmsford, MA is unique, and because we are still staunch fans of the Ezra Brooks – as what looks like a knockoff is 10 times the original. However, we have to contend with the other side of the spectrum and whether this is really more like an Evan Williams.
Bird Dog Kentucky Blended Whiskey 750mL
Maybe it’s the whole BMD incident from last week, but this being a blend of whiskey and other spirits (not the same thing, but the aroma and taste make it hard to discern.) Apologies we’ve not made it clear – this is a blended whiskey. However as we found out via the back – it’s not a blend of many whiskeys but a blend of bourbon and neutral spirits.
Calumet Farm Bourbon Whiskey 750mL
While we understand how integral horse racing is to the Kentucky area, and that by extension it’s not insane how many bourbons associate with that heritage. (Lord knows KY has some other stuff not to latch onto). Between other industries, Nascar, bluegrass, and more – you’d just sort of wish to get a bourbon that doesn’t have a stupid 4 legged creature.
Wild Turkey Longbranch Kentucky Straight Bourbon 750mL
We’ve had a few years to reconsider the Wild Turkey brand and if we were willing to try them again (what’s a minor 7 and a half years anyway), and thankfully this smaller batch version aged with mesquite (weird) actually manages to pull off an atually good whiskey this time.
Old Bardstown Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750mL
We genuinely feel the need to apologize folks. We knew getting into a 2 month or so whiskey bender that there would be a few stinkers, but if the last weeks have been bad – there’s no salvation here. This however goes out of it’s way beyond just being mediocre or overpriced to tasting downright awful.
Michter’s US-1 Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey 750mL
As we know at Honest Booze Reviews the cardinal sin is to outright lie, or to in some way deceive. This is why we hate it when a smell gives us such hope for a taste that is lacking. It’s why when a vodka claims to be ‘elegantly smooth’ but burns like acid that we feel cheated. We understand why it happens, because for a lot of people their booze buying comes into either A. Go with what you know from some friend/family. B. Be adventurous and try something random/on sale. Often in those cases the decision to try something new can come down to things like what it says on the back, the overall look, and things like years.
