Another week and another cheap whiskey, although at least in this case it’s actually not too bad. Sure it’s made by some weird group that apparently was worked in some section of Kilbeggan, and – well it has a screw top folks. Okay and yes it does burn like dog biting your leg, but like you snuck up on him in his spot under the table – he’s still a very good boy.
Not sure where they get off calling this the Gentle Giant of anything – let alone a whiskey, and it also makes no sense what the benefit of the specific words gentle giant would be – is that like a special thing or something in Ireland (hit us up in the comments if there’s something beyond the common meaning/usage).
What they Say: “Bottle Front: The gentle giant of Irish whiskeys Wolfhound is smooth and rich with hues of deep golden amber, Crafted from fine Irish malt & grain by the master distiller of Wolfhound Irish Whiskey
Bottle Back: Enhance the aroma and flavor of our Irish whiskey with a touch of ginger ale soda or natural spring water and release Wolfhound’s hidden character.”
Taste: 7.0 – There’s actually a nice bit of spice and sweetness complementing one another at the onset here.
Aftertaste: 4.0 – It gets a bit smokier, more orange, and overall worse as it goes on though.
Burn/Smooth: 2.0 – God that burns like a syphilitic ass. It thankfully all comes to you at the end, but fuck it’s there.
Aroma: 4.5 – If you really dig into this it does smell like what you’d expect from an ‘irish whiskey’ but very little beyond that. As far as standards go this is bog.
Honesty: 6.5 – Smooth and rich is not what you would say about this old dog. It otherwise does fine, and it’s specific mention of ginger ale where it actually works best is a boon for them.
Mixability: 6.0
W/ Rocks: 6.0 – You get a large punch of that flavor, but without a lot of the downsides. It is overall a marked improvement, but not exactly great in terms of category here.
Whiskey and Ginger Ale: 7.0 – Annoyingly that is actually pretty good. The flavor adds to the ginger and none of the bad aspects of this whiskey crop up.
Whiskey and Coke: 5.0 – We tried this despite it being unconventional, but due to price/quality it made sense. Here it’s okay, but not much more.
Value: 7.0 – If this was 4 dollars cheaper we might be singing from the rafters that there is a finally super cheap irish whiskey that is worth it. However sitting among other whiskies for this price – this is still a good price.

Final Thoughts: The best thing about this though is that with the power of ginger we can take away all the bad, and leave the good. With a price like that – it’s enough for most people’s usage of a cheap irish whiskey (read: get drunk off a tall cocktail and then just enjoy neat because you can’t even feel it anymore). So for that we have to commend the little hound, give him an old sock and settle into the parlor chair. (No clue where that metaphor was going)
Anyone who could send me a bottle of this to Europe ?
As a longtime owner of the Irish Wolfhound Breed, i try since years to get a bottle of this, even an empty bottle would be find.
I wrote to many shops in the US… but no one was
willing to send one over….
