Week 2 of the ‘Old Mexico’ brand our fury at them has only continued to grow in the interim. There is some saving grace here as this is not as terrible as last week’s Blanco, but that’s quite a low ankle height bar to clear. These for the same price so there’s no other way to say this – but go for the gold.
Salvation is at hand as our friend Jimmy Buffet can attest you can at least make a Margarita out of this – that alone is reason numero uno why gold > Blanco. Beyond that, there is at least a decent enough citrus and agave flavor to this, but there’s still a lot of problems.
What they Say: “Old Mexico is an artisanal and small-batch tequila.
Ripe Blue Weber agave is picked from the fields of Jalisco at the peak of maturity, slow-cooked for several days in old-style brick and stone ovens, and carefully extracted using traditional Molino Mills.
Our tequila is slow-fermented for up to 48 hours in open tanks and twice-distilled in copper pot stills.
This meticulous and time-honored process yields a tequila with both extraordinary quality and flavor”
Taste: 6.0 – It starts off as a burst of citrus, agave, and sweetness. It’s overall quite delicious at first.
Aftertaste: 3.0 – Here you get a more muted agave and a taste that if honest reminds one of cigarettes. It is certainly weaker.
Burn/Smooth: 4.0 – You do get some burn here, but it’s mostly on the far backside of the tequila. It’s not an easy sipper given that upfront tequila burn, but it could be worse.
Aroma: 5.5 – You get much more aroma here over the silver. It’s almost a warm sort of winter nutmeg kinda flavor. The agave is there, but it’s kind.
Honesty: 1.0 – That is the same text as the Blanco which feels more like they’re just too lazy to change even a single line to say (oh but this one sits in a cask for 2 months.) Combine that once again with this pretending to be a small microdistillery to appeal to the ‘Millenials’ and it being a giant brand is bunk.
Mixability: 4.67
W/ Rocks: 4.0 – Even with ice that’s a lot to deal with, and this does not come out ‘on top’ in fact with rocks it’s barely passable.
Margarita: 6.0 – It actually adds some of the flavorings to the Marg here, which is commendable. Overall it’s much better than it’s lighter cousin as the taste here is enough to balance.
Tequila Sunrise: 4.0 – The tequila actually has a part to play here, but overall this is not the best sunrise.
Value: 4.0 – This MERCIFULLY fares better mixed (and overall) than the Blanco. Oh, sure it’s not, nor should be considered a brand of choice. However, we will be kinder here as at least this can be used.

Final Thoughts: While this might seem like a balm compared to last week allow us to be clear – don’t buy this. Fuck this tequila, fuck MS Walker, and just buy something better (maybe check that stats page), or as we do – keep to the old ways of 1800.
