Old Mexico Blanco Tequila 750mL

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another cheap but shit tequila. Yes no holding back on our thoughts for after the fold, we want this shit in the Google Search Results to ward you off it. This is actually a 2-parter with the silver this week and the gold next week, and while that’s better we must first start with the swill.

Overall it’s just heavy agave and burn, the worst combo. Not much there to help you, and even the addition of juices or ice fails to stymy this bullshit. The only good thing to come out of this exchange is at least it didn’t cost us enough to take away from the scotch budget.

What they Say: “Old Mexico is an artisanal and small-batch tequila.

Ripe Blue Weber agave is picked from the fields of Jalisco at the peak of maturity, slow-cooked for several days in old-style brick and stone ovens, and carefully extracted using traditional Molino Mills.

Our tequila is slow-fermented for up to 48 hours in open tanks and twice-distilled in copper pot stills.

This meticulous and time-honored process yields a tequila with both extraordinary quality and flavor.”

Taste: 3.5 – Some sweetness and some agave, but even here that burn begins and ends only in death.

Aftertaste: 3.0 – A bit more of a warmer wood flavor, but still just agave and that burn that fails to quit.

Burn/Smooth: 0.5 – HA. That burns like the fires of hell. It’s rough not just to keep a straight face, but a level head sampling this.

Aroma: 4.0 – You certainly get some agave, but there’s also this sort of wallpaper paste kinda smell here. It’s not wholly pleasant.

Honesty: 1.0 – This is about as red flag-y as you can get, calling it small batch and artisanal when it’s made as just another MS Walker off-brand. Sure it might actually be that all the way down, but it feels dishonest, which is a big no-no here. Also yeah it’s extraordinary, extraordinarily bad (doh’ho’ho)

Mixability: 2.5

W/ Rocks: 2.0 – Better? Not really. Oh sure maybe in some universe having tequila here is for the greater good, but not this.

Margarita: 2.5 – It’s not a good margarita, there’s too much of shit tequila to taste. Bad.

Tequila Sunrise: 3.0 – Overall? Not a good sunrise by any measure.

Value: 1.0 – This tequila exists now for a single reason, for dumb college kids who just want to get drunk and are fine wincing at shots anyway – so fuck it, use this. For anything else – nope, nadda, no thanks. Oh, you can be really cheap, but fuck off.

Final Thoughts: If you’re wondering why there’s so much anger coursing through our veins it’s because it’s tequilas like this that give the whole spirit a bad rep, what makes people swear up and down to never have it again because of one (or a few) bad nights due to garbage like this. Anyway, see you next week if some amount of aging can save us.
