A rum this week in between so much whiskey that we are trying to space out (we don’t truly apologize, but sorry). This dominican spirit truly does capture something of the tropical rum oft desired with it’s citrus and spice components. However while it is subpar it’s far better than something Pyrat XO…
The marker of a bad rum is when it can’t do 1 of 3 things. Smell good, taste good, go with Coke. This fails all 3 of those tests and is a best middle of the road on one of them. There’s no where in the verse that this rum earns a good scoring, our undying love, or (and this is our hope) the money of anyone lucky enough to read this.
What they Say: “A blend of the finest Dominican rums patiently settled in oak barrels”
Taste: 5.0 – It’s almost like a rum with some spice and orange, but there’s something off.
Aftertaste: 3.5 – Which that aftertaste shows in trhe uncontrolled power and taste of this rum
Burn/Smooth: 2.0 – That hits like a freight truck. It’s not just a pure burn, but honestly this punches you in the damn face.
Aroma: 3.0 – The sweet caramel is there, but so too is the awful ‘rum’ that is like paint thinner with a hint of orange.
Honesty: 5.5 – All of the points gained by the good text on the blend of rums, and lack of wank is lost to that damn awful pour spout.
Mixability: 4.75
W/ Rocks: 4.0 – That does not help in any regard.
Rum and Coke: 5.5 – I adds a bit of orangle to the R&C, but overall isn’t great.
Value: 4.0 – At this price, it’s still too damn high to be a viable option

Final Thoughts: This may say Gran Anejo on the bottle, but a Grand Anejo it is not. As we said a rum just needs to do something, any one thing – right. This gets it all wrong, and is as the kids in the biz say – bad shit.
