Sangre de Vida Reposado Tequila 750mL

Week 2 of the Sangre’s tequila set of reviews, this time with a fiery reposado. This is one is one of my favorites in terms of design with the flames and red. I also like that the heat you get on the backburner makes this one of the better mixers from the Sangre line.

Really though the main problem here is that with that pep in flavor and heat, you get the accompanying burn. It also just costs far too much just like the others from Sangre.

What they Say: “” (No text on bottles)

Taste: 5.0 – It starts of with a taste much like the aroma, barely there, a bit mellow, and a tiny bit sweet.

Aftertaste: 6.0 – Based on the smell, and sweet taste you would think this would be mild, but it kicks up the heat and almost smoke here. It goes as a 1-2 punch of agave heat, that can actually be pleasant if prepared.

Burn/Smooth: 3.5 – Oh boy does this burn and not go down smooth. It’s certainly not hellfire or rotgut, but damn.

Aroma: 4.0 – So if the blanco was a scorpion, this is a jack rabbit. The smell is so faint, very mellow, and gone almost instantly. Taking a whiff you get a bit, but have to keep actively trying to smell deeply to get more.

Honesty: 8.0 – They don’t have any text (even on the website), and it’s a painted skull. While Kah does this as well, this has no wanky text. So therefore for this (and all of Sangre’s spirits) it will come down to a base score of 7 + the aesthetic of that bottle itself.  However special mention must be said about how light this is in color, helping to hide it’s heat. I do like the flaming demon with fire eyes despite it being very cheesy in terms of look.

Mixability: 7.5

Tequila Sunrise: 7.5 – You still get some of that heat, and sure the cocktail does diminish it, but it’s got pep to it. Almost a bit too much so you may need to adjust, but it’s good.

Margarita: 7.5 – Again you will need to adjust a bit to get it right, but it’s got such a pep to it that makes the cocktail stand out.

Value: 5.0 – That is a bit too much to pay for what is admittedly a better mixer tequila, but you get a sweet looking skull out of it. Yes if this was 10 dollars cheaper we’d be singing it’s praises but getting that close to $50 hurts.

Final Thoughts: Of the two so far this is certainly the better (let’s see if it maintains that lead) However while I like the spicyness this brings overall as a tequila it’s major selling points are still that kick of flavor it brings to a cocktail, and the design.
