Lunazul Blanco Tequila 750mL

We previously had the Reposado of this last year, and straight away we have to say that while this will not be winning any awards in our books – it’s far and away better than it’s aged cousin. The problem we have here is not that this is too often subpar or worse – it’s that there’s no bright spot here to dazzle you.

It’s odd for us to be so down on something that below will go on to score 7’s and 6’s, but we can’t find a good overall use for this. It’s not bad neat or in a cocktail, but we’d have much rather enjoyed it if it was. It feels like it’s just on the cusp of being great, and we know sadly already that aging it will not save us.

What they Say: “Distilled from New Zealand whey made with New Zealand Spring Water”

Taste: 7.0 – There’s a balanced amount between some spice and the agave, it’s enjoyable. As a neat tequila, it’s certainly pleasant enough to drink.

Aftertaste: 6.5 – It ends with some sweetness, and then a more muted agave flavor.

Burn/Smooth: 5.5 – There’s burn here, but overall it does go down easy enough. It is however not a smooth sipping tequila by any measure which is actually rather sad.

Aroma: 7.0 – It’s a nice agave flavor without so many other aspects going on. It is light and a bit salty, but overall there’s nothing bad here thus making it quite good.

Honesty: 6.0 – They thankfully don’t shoot themselves in the foot by adding a bunch of superfluous text. However there’s something off when you take a look at this, and suddenly it clicks that the design could be described as that ‘Hipster/Pinterest’ look so there’s something there to be desired. While it does not lose many points for that, it’s also not doing much to actively gain them beyond the simple statement of production.

Mixability: 5.0

W/ Rocks: 5.0 – It doesn’t smooth things as much as you would expect it too.

Margarita: 6.0 – It’s a nice margarita, if a little on the sugary side. Overall though if you are looking for a Blanco there are better options.

Tequila Sunrise: 4.0 – That isn’t a stellar cocktail if we are being asked.

Value: 7.0 – That is actually a good spitting distance for things like Milagro or 1800, which this is likely trying to compete with. It suffers though by not having a stand out cocktail.

Final Thoughts: Those scores might be a bit disparaging, but it’s hard to overstate that this is simply just a slight overpay tequila, at a good price point, and yet is unlikely to be purchased for a repeat performance. This is mostly because of 1800 mixes better, we don’t often by tequila outside of reviews, and when we do it’s usually one of the silly looking 1800 handles.
