Generous Gin 750mL

So as we get close to Christmas time we decided to do some further reflections on gin, so this will be week 1/3 in gin reviews, and the spirit of the season has graced us with something excellent. Beyond that and we truly mean this as well – as good as this is – there is another. (#StarWarsTLShype)

Back to the hype about this gin, which comes in a delightfully beautiful bottle, with its contents having this complex botanical and citrus going on. It actually tastes like some of the damn ingredients they say it does instead of some obscure note of pineapple. (in fairness not sure what an elderberry is, but the rest is spot on)

What they Say: “Generous and Unique with the essences of citrus, pink berries, blood oranges, grey pepper, elderberries, lime and juniper.

Taste: 6.0 – You get more an herb and juniper at first and it’s a bit brash in its taste.

Aftertaste: 8.0 – Then the citrus gets in on the game, but there’s certainly some ‘pepper-y’ like flavor going on as well. Here it comes in multiple small waves and is much more subtle.

Burn/Smooth: 6.0 – There’s a sort of ‘juniper flare’ going on that makes this not really a smooth sipper, but it’s not entirely destroying your mouth or causing wingeing.

Aroma: 8.0 – It’s certainly juniper first, but there is some citrus and flowery stuff going as well. Without any awfulness, we have to say – damn good aroma.

Honesty: 9.0 – We will continue to deduct points for Oxford Comma’s until morale improves. That being said the bottle is very pretty, very french, and damn perfect. The text on the back is also a strong contender because it doesn’t read as a holier-than-thou so much as a damn ingredient list. Overall spectacular marks here, this gin know what it is, looks good, and almost earns it.

Mixability: 5.75

Gin and Tonic: 7.5  – It makes the drink ‘fun’ bringing along the wild flavors it has but not the more burn of super juniper. It’s a very unique take and a welcome one.

Martini: 4.0 – That bit of olive and vermouth really – forces this to not be good, honestly – it’s better neat and chilled than it is here.

Value: 4.0 – If this gin had a problem, it’s that Hendrick’s costs 4 dollars less, and is entirely a unique experience comparatively. This gin is good – full stop, but that near 40 dollar price tag means that even if it is ‘good’ it’s barely worth it.

Final Thoughts: If we had a real complaint here it’s the slight bit of sadness adding just a tiny amount of olive and vermouth does, so unless you order a very clean martini chilled – it’s suboptimal, and if it only had that in its pocket too it might be a contender for favorite gin of the year.
