Laphroaig ‘Lore’ Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750mL

We first had a sample of this back on a whiskey Wednesday event, and given the course of that was a few folks and multiple tastings one after the other without a proper tasting it earned a solid A. Now though 3 years later it’s time to put it under the lights properly and see whether the Lore of this whiskey holds up. In short it does, but if you’re encountering this review due to a frantic google search in the local liquor store seeing if this is up to snuff – you likely have already spotted the main downside, namely the price tag.

Chivas Regal ‘Mizunara’ Blended Scotch Whisky 750mL

Now this is not aged as long as – well we don’t know because it’s a blend, but it’s shorter than the 18 year we’ve had on this site ages ago (and still love dearly for it’s ability to mix well). The trick they’ve taken with this one is instead of aging in American or French oak barrels (as is the common way) they’ve opted for some Japanese ‘Mizunara’ oak instead for both added rarity and presumably to make headway into the large Japanese loving whiskey market. The problem is that because this seems like an idea cooked up no less than maybe 5-10 years ago, it might need some more time in that Mizunara.

The Busker Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey 750mL

As we inch closer to Christmas expect the reviews to have more of a whiskey bent, simply by nature of gifts, although we do have something truly special for xmas later this month that’s not a whiskey. Here we have a gift we got ourselves as it’s been a while since there’s been an Irish Whiskey on the site. Thankfully this is a gift well received, and despite it’s very brash design, be assured it’s not nearly as brash in the glass having been calmed with spices and honey.

Peerless Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750mL

Sometimes it’s been a hell of a week so you decide – fuck it, let’s splurge and buy an over 80 dollar bourbon just to feel things. However while for the most part Scotches are fairly stable at that price range, with bourbon you really are making a shot in the dark. All to often everything is priced wildly with some things being far less or too much with no barometer to help you. What then of this expression with it’s barrel shaped bottle and Wegmans pedigree? (Yes because of the single barrel labeling this actually says Wegmans on it which is hilarious) Oh right, the result – well it’s mixed.

Agitator Kentucky Bourbon Finished in Red Wine Barrels Whiskey 750mL

Aging whiskey in red wine barrels isn’t as common compared to beers, or even to sherry casking, but as we’ve seen before with Blood Oak, the effect is solid enough that more should give it a shot. Luckily Agitator makes wine, so them doing this makes – well a lot of sense. The question though is whether this soak in an old barrel has done anything to improve the whiskey, or just made it a slight shade of red.

Black Eagle Bourbon Whiskey 750mL

Of course, not 2 weeks ago we had a bourbon that was well liked, and recommendable. So by the laws given of the universe we must balance with something from the lower shelves. And yes we pride ourselves on being the ones able to find the gold coin at the bottom of the wishing well, but let’s be honest – it’s mostly pennies. (We don’t actually do that because it’s morally wrong to take wishes, but the metaphor is strong).

Bunnahabhain 12 Yr. Islay Single Malt Scotch 750mL

So it’s pronounced Bu-na-ha-venn. Just felt the need to get that out of the way, because the name (and dear god their literature) can be summed up best by the word verbose. If we’re honest the contents of the glass can also fall under the category of verbose as well. The whiskey here is quite a complex thing – but the problem with complexity in a scotch is whether it fits the expectations and the desires of the drinker.
