I have actually visited the Tower of London and seen the men wearing the outfit’s pictured on the bottle. I feel though that instead there should be a crow for how badly this tastes. Not to give it a bad rap, but this is normally what you serve in bars as the cheap gin for a good reason.
Not that it’s terribly cheap for us, but with the market penetration Beefeaters has most establishments get a very nice bulk pricing. We’ve previously had a specialty version of theirs but I felt I needed to eventually review the normal version – despite my apprehension with cheap gins of late.
What they Say: “Based on James Burrough’s original 19th century recipe, the botanicals in Beefeater Gin are steeped for 24 hours prior to distillation resulting in a complex, yet perfectly balanced gin of depth & integrity. Wild juniper combines with the subtle spice of coriander & the citrus freshness of lemons & seville oranges for a vibrant gin suitable for every occasion.ased on James Burrough’s Original”
Taste: 4.5 – It starts off nice and clean.
Aftertaste: 1.0 – However it keeps going and tastes sort of what you expect drain cleaner to taste like.
Burn/Smooth: 2.0 –That burns and also just does not go down well.
Aroma: 4.0 – It’s not a bad smell, but it certainly lacks any sort of depth or complexity.
Honesty: 5.0 – Complex, perfect balance? Listen I’ll give you subtle flavors (real subtle), but the rest is outright lies. If this gin said nothing beyond it being based in the 19th century I woud give it something good because then it’d be British old-timey bad, but no.
Mixability: 5.0
Gin and Tonic: 5.0 – This is the standard gin and tonic – I assume when you ask for one at a bar this is likely what you’d get.
Red Baron: 5.0 – It’s okay.
Value: 3.0 – This is a substandard vodka, but unlike something like Gordon’s it’s not even a substandard price.

Final Thoughts: If you are looking for a good London Dry Gin – than somehow you’ve managed to get to the bottom of this review without clicking something else among our gin reviews – please do give it a search though because Beefeaters is not the gin you want.
