Well that’s the end of our concentrated effort to handle some more tequilas and light rums, now we’re back to randomly doing whatever we desire. So in a true bit of randomness – we chose a rum. Because probability.
The entry this week is another addition to the bottom shelf rum categories that I continue to try knowing that as I age I will never never try again. So we meet Lady Bligh, which you read as Blight because you have looked at the bottom shelf of rum, and your mind fills in blanks like that.
Not to say that it’s all bad here – the sweetness is actually rather nice especially compared to last week’s Shellback which I’m certain is half simple syrup.
What they Say: “Lady Bligh Authentic Spiced Rum captures the essence of the pirate spirit with a blend of premium rum; spices and natural flavors.”
Taste: 7.5 – The taste here is really great. It’s got a sweet caramel taste to it, and the sweetness is really nice.
Aftertaste: 3.0 – And yet here is where it ends tasting downright awful. I have no idea what the taste is here, but god is it awful.
Burn/Smooth: 5.0 – It’s not really a burn, but it just does not go down smooth because of that awful aftertaste.
Aroma: 6.5 – Really sweet flavor to it. Has a really caramel smell.
Honesty: 6.5 – I feel like sailors would drink this and nickname it Lady Blight. In terms of the other things surrounding it – it certainly does not detract any points (you can come fight me if you think lady pirate captains are wrong) so yeah it earns a decent score here.
Mixability: 6.0
On Rocks: 5.0 – Here it sort of blends the taste and aftertaste, so you don’t get left with the awful ending, but it’s sort of spread out through the whole drink.
Rum and Coke: 7.0 – Ahh and here we come to the purpose of this drink (which they call a Lady and Coke on the bottle) That awful taste is gone by the coke, and the sweetness isn’t overpowering.
Value: 6.5 – It’s certainly rather low on the shelf, and while it does make a good rum and coke – there are other rums I would prefer to have. However the bang for buck here is pretty good.

Final Thoughts:
This really is an average bottom shelf rum, and it really only gets that extra point for the caramel and value it provides.
I’m trying to buy lady bligh, for my bar 1.75
Why add name calling to your reviews, “Blight” – seriously? … seems childish. I’ve only mixed the Lady with squirt, called a Lady Squirt in these parts and pretty damn good, easy, travels well and refreshing on a summers day or night. Cheers y’all
Was looking for a cheap rum to mix with coke this weekend, and came across Lady Bligh (which admittedly until just now I had been misreading as blight– it just feels fitting for a rum!). Four days and three glasses later, it’s far from the worst I’ve tried. Granted I haven’t had it straight, and likely never will, but mixed with Pepsi it goes down smooth while the effects are decidedly ample.
Tried this for the first time tonight! Straight it’s fire in the hole. Mixed in a tiki glass with Dole orange, pineaple, banana juice & club soda it’s quite good! Holds it’s own with the juices. Nice carmelized creme brulee’ finish.
Plus it’s distilled in my hometown. The tropical paradise of St Louis Missouri? Find it at Dirt Cheap stores here for $7-$8 bucks.
