We’re kicking off a 3-week special with my name on it (technically). Yes, it’s a collection from Old St. Andrews, which came in this adorable package of mini casks (fake obviously). We start the 3 weeks off with the 10-year offering – codenamed Twilight. Which actually this would the 10th year anniversary of the film this November – not that we think the scots knew that.
Of course as usual when we do these kinds of series, they often have an auspicious start, such is the case here. This is billed as the light and delicate one, but it needs more time in that cask to lighten up because the backend of this feels more like a bourbon kicking you then some ginger.
What they Say: “’Twilight’ draws its light delicate flavours of lemongrass and apples from a minimum of 10 years maturation in American white oak casks. The delicate floral nose invites a sip to appreciate the refreshing hints of ginger leaving a warming yet light and satisfying fresh finish. ‘Twilight’ is a perfect salute to the end of the day. The fresh and delicate one.”
Taste: 5.0 – It’s nice and light at first. You get a bit of fruit, but overall not much.
Aftertaste: 6.5 – That back end hits like a real whiskey though. And it lingers on for quite a while.
Burn/Smooth: 3.5 – Smooth is not really the right word here. For a single malt scotch, this is kinda harsh.
Aroma: 6.5 – There’s a sugar caramel part to this making it more rum like the whiskey is still there though, and it smells quite good.
Honesty: 3.0 – Fresh and delicate is a funny way of saying horse shit, but it’s all you can read from that text. Sure you get some of that maybe lemongrass/apple/ginger, but come on. Also Twilight is sadly a ruined word nowadays. We’d go lower, but the tasting set we got in tiny casks is fun.
Mixability: 7.5
W/ Rocks: 7.5 – There it is! The whiskey they were talking about without that harshness, the actual salute to the end of the day. Turns out it was hiding in the dark and needed a bit of light to – END OF SOLIQOY.
Value: 3.0 – It’s a full 10 dollars cheaper then it’s brother to be reviewed in 2 weeks, but even then at $41 for a blended 10 year this is simply ridiculous and the redemption of ice is not enough to save it.

Final Thoughts: Thankfully this is the weaker of the 3 so look forward to some better scotches from Old St. Andrews in the coming weeks. As for the 10 years? Pass.
