Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum 750mL

Booze Reviews.  It’s a statement.  It is also an amazing way to find out about which kinds of booze should be flowing over your taste buds and into your stomach.  I am the man called Justice and this week the Booze reviews crew will be looking into one of the Buffalo’s favorite rums:  Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum.  The last time all of us at the Buffalo Lounge reviewed a rum it had fire warnings. This week we’ve move onto a spiced rum that, while 94 proof isn’t going to Chuck Norris your face.

Sailor Jerry Rum

This Rum came with high praise; the Buffalo himself places this rum in very high regard, and so the rest of us went into this review with high expectations.  Unfortunately, it would appear that most of the buffalo-hype that fueled our expectations was a bit beyond what the rum could deliver.  This is not to say it was a bad rum, just that it wasn’t the god of all spiced rums we were expecting.

Now before we get to the metrics, let’s hear what the bottle has to say:

What they say: “The father of old-school tattooing, Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins was an innovator and a true independent spirit whose work is still revered today.  A master craftsman, his artistry and integrity remain as timeless as does the rum that bears his signature.  Our family company makes this rum the authentic way—strong, spiced & smooth.  Mix it with something, or just pour it over ice and let ‘our work speak for itself.’”

Now this paragraph here is one of the manliest things we’ve seen since we read the back of 151.  Makes you wonder if rums are just inherently manly.  This man was the father of old-school tattooing and he has a fairly potent rum named after him; serious manly points.

Okay, so you’ve heard what I have to say, you’ve heard what the booze has to say; its time to hear what the numbers have to say:

Taste: 5.5 – “Nothing spectacular bit of good taste but too much alcohol.” “Nice spiced rum taste but there’s still that kick.”

Aftertaste: 3.875 – “The initial aftertaste is awful; it gives that nice warm burn eventually.”

Burn/Smooth: 7.125 – “At first it seems like the burn is covered by the bad aftertaste, but after that there isn’t a burn at all, just a smooth warm feeling.”

Aroma: 8 – “Such a nice spiced rum smell. A lot fuller than some other spiced rums.”

Honesty: 8.25 – “Points first off for being a rum that’s really a rum, also the Sailor Jerry is a tattooist who has a pipe.” “Also each bottle has a pinup girl for you to collect/view as you finish the bottle.” “Like the bottle has some wank, but not an offensive amount of it.” “The higher proof makes it more authentic.”

Mixability: 7.5

Rum and Coke: 8 – “Really great rum and coke.” “No flavor gets lost but the kick and aftertaste die down.”

Red Rum: 7 – “Taste’s good”  “Not bad.”

Value: 6.625 – “Meh overall.” “You get rum for mixing (mostly with coke) and it does that job well enough.”
