Allagash Avancé Bourbon Barrel Aged Sour Ale

Avancé: 8.0 – It’s a bit weird to go from a sour that’s aged as that certainly has an aspect here, giving this a sort of graham cracker like feeling, and of course that’s complemented by the heavy strawberry flavoring. The result is like almost cheesecake like but w/o the cream and also it’s a beer. One does wonder if they made it with lactaid if it could pull off such a feat, but as is it’s a decidedly delicious and unique beer nonetheless.

Allagash Little Sal Ale

Little Sal: 8.5 – It’s not often a mere trio of words can make one salivate, but Allagash, Sour, and Blueberry fit the bill. We don’t talk much about ‘color’ here on HBR because it’s often meaningless, but you pour this and look at the color and know it’s going to be a good time. As for the beer itself, it’s as expected – well executed, the sour is there, but the sweetness of the blueberries means it’s never not enjoyable. If we have a complaint it’s that the local store only sells 1 per customer and that soon enough this will likely be gone forever.

Ommegang Game of Thrones – King in the North Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

King in the North: 6.0 – The barrel aging here adds some sweetness but does not override everything. At least it’s not ruined, but add that to the chocolate and this is a dessert in the glass. Overall could be better, but it is a solid beer as usual from Ommegang and this line of beers.

Price Average: $25 for 4-pack with glass

Harviestoun Brewery Ola Dubh Special Reserve 16

Ola Dubh Special Reserve 16: 1.0 – Well if Highland Park (the most baseline scotch) is what’s used – how does that affect this beer? Well it removed all head. However we’re sad to report that as for aging a beer in whiskey falling on the side of sweet or successfuly, this is far too sweet. There are some nice flavors there, but it’s all so overshadowed, and quite frankly the rest of this beer was poured out.

Allagash Brewing Co Pictavia Scotch Ale

Pictavia Scotch Ale: 7.5 – A very very well done scotch ale, another great hit from Allagash. This is certainly what you want from a scotch ale, and the barrel aging from the scotch barrel hasn’t turned it cloyingly sweet like some bourbon barrels do. The problem here is that you kind of wish it was more. It’s a solid scotch ale of course, but it’s missing that tiny bit it needs to push it over the edge.

Price Average: $20 for 4-pack

Upland Brewing Co. Iridescent Barrel Aged Fruited Sour

Iridescent: 3.0 – Apricot flavor is the saving grace of this beer, but overall it’s a sour that is extremely upfront and doesn’t linger at all. The power is almost terrible because it’s too in your face. We understand that sours can be bold, but this is a slap that doesn’t even give you any bit of enjoyment. (if you catch our drift)

Innis & Gunn Raspberry Barrel Aged Saison

Raspberry Barrel Aged Saison: 8.5 – “The best way to describe this beer is that it just “jives.” A vast majority of the time the barrel ageing process results in a beer dominated by the taste whiskey and not much else. A saison might not be what one first thinks of when one goes to barrel age a beer, but the barrel has been quite kind to the beer in this case. It’s sweet and crisp, with the raspberries revealing themselves in a long satisfying finish. Also, it’s priced more competitively than a lot of its barrel-aged brethren. All around a nice beer to pick up for a special treat.
