Captain Morgan Jack-O Blast 750mL (Special)

Trick-or-treat folks, and no don’t worry we are not playing a trick by reviewing a pumpkin spice spirit. No we were contacted by a taylorstrategy.com rep. wondering if we wanted a sample of ‘the first pumpkin spice rum brought to market.’ Of course being good sports we said yes, hoping to get a sample nip. They then sent us a bottle turning this from a ‘hey here’s a thing to try, to I guess we should review this’, and here we are. Now no worries we will continue to focus on spirits instead of niche flavorings (so many vodka flavors), but think of this as a Halloween special where we consider the following as both a rum and flavored booze.

Atlantic Brewing Co. Coal Porter

Coal Porter: 4.0 – So I’m beginning to wonder if they literally threw coal into the batch. Because going down this tastes like a nice standard porter, but that lingering aftertaste might as well be coal dust, like It’s almost eerie how akin to coal it is. It’s not exactly a bad porter overall unless you are a serious anti-charcoal fan.

Green Flash Brewing Co. Le Freak Ale

Le Freak Ale: 2.0 – It’s a combo of a Belgian Tripel and an American Imperial IPA (AIIPA?). Which is actually a good description of this beer. It’s got a strong taste, and I’m sure if you liked it would find this amazing. However I can attest that in my small sample size of a few people (damn you p values!) it’s unliekly you will enjoy this beer. It’s hoppy in all the wrong places, has gravity in all the wrong places – it’s a bastardized combo that shouldn’t exist.

Club Caribe Silver Rum 750mL

Well that’s enough whiskies for a while so let’s jump into a massive headache. The entire raison d’etre of this site is to be comprehensive and truthful, but there are downsides. For every diamond in the rough we can often find going across the various shelves and tiers there is often still ‘the rough’. Club Caribe is however so far in the rough an ogre just asked us to get out his swamp. #golfjokes #shrekislife

Avery Brewing Liliko’i Kepolo Witbier

Liliko’i Kepolo Witbier: 6.0 – Ive likely not had many beers where passion fruit is the main taste, and while I’ve likely had it as part in other beers I can agree with the concept. However because this is a flavored beer I can’t get picky with the niche and have to rate this against all flavored beers in which case this isn’t super stellar. It’s certainly quite good though.

Maredsous 6 Blond Ale

Maredsous 6 Blond Ale: 7.0 – It’s definitely an incredibly complex beer, even more so for being an abbey blonde ale instead of a quad or tripel. That aspect though might be what kills it, because while it has complexity it lacks the depth and power you would hope it to have, that alone would take it from an admittedly great level into near-perfection.

Stag’s Head Blended Scotch Whisky 750mL

We are continuing this (likely extended) month of various whiskies, this time going with a scotch. However instead of this week being some single malt that I either enjoy immensely or wish I had never met –  we are doing a blend I picked up way back when I was in the UK. (Damn it’s been 4 months already). I got this because it was cheap, and I knew it wasn’t a scotch I could take my time with having less than a week.
