Cenote Reposado Tequila 750mL

This tequila looks expensive, and no surprise – it is. You could, therefore, extrapolate that it would be of a high bar of quality to justify that price. However, this is HBR and we know that means squat most of the time. This – is one of those times.

What we get here is a fairly okay tequila that is utterly ruined by how much it wanks over itself, and the cost you pay for the privilege of “enjoying it”. Any hope of being saved by the cocktails is gone as well as we basically get a subpar product.

What they Say: “The Mayans considered cenotes as ‘windows into the underworld’ and believed that they were inhabited by gods and goddesses. This ultra-premium tequila is carefully crafted to celebrate the spectacular limestone cenotes of the Yucatan Penisula and to serve as a tribute to the ancient Mayan language of glyphs.”

Taste: 4.0 – It carries on like a regular blanco or reposado would. It’s nice and light and surprisingly easy to down.

Aftertaste: 7.0 – You certainly get more of an agave kick here, and the’s a whiff of smoke to complete it.

Burn/Smooth: 6.0 – There is a tiny bit of burn to accompany the agave kick, but overall this is really smooth to drink.

Aroma: 3.0 – It’s light, but almost not there forcing you to dig in which caused to have to pause on the scoring for a day as we actually got too close. That itself is a marker though.

Honesty: 3.0 – “Ultra Premium”? We don’t know what do you pray too, but the concept of this being anything other than substandard is disillusioned. The bottle is nice, and the cork weighty, but overall the words ultra premium stick like sand in an oyster.

Mixability: 5.0

Tequila Sunrise: 5.0 – It’s another middle of the road not too bad, not good tequila sunrise.

Margarita: 5.0 – Sure. It works, but like there’s no appeal or anything great about this.

Value: 1.0 – That is hands down, WAY TOO FUCKEN MUCH for this tequila. This is at its best day okay to sip, and average for a mix. To charge $50 is downright criminal.

Final Thoughts: It may have been only over a month or so, but it’s fair to say the beauty that was Trago still lingers on the mind, and it’s painful to have a tequila that’s really not worth it and makes us say – you want to spend more than half a Franklin – spend it right.
