Gentlemen Jack 750mL

Why hello there, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to another fine reading of our aptly named Booze Reviews. I am your writer, with kung fu grip, smoking jacket, and fez sold separately: William Henri Neve The Fourth. Right now I find myself relaxed, happy, and with a taste in my mouth that is familiar and yet – rings truer to my taste buds than its triumphant popular cousin. This week there was a sale at the local liquor store and my heart skipped a beat as Gentleman Jack was on sale and was the same price as Jack Daniels Black Label.

Now, being raised in a household where Jack Daniels was my mother’s choice of hard liquor – it was also my first alcoholic beverage. I longed to try all the varieties of Jack Daniels until my liver cried for mercy, and my palette pleaded for plenty more. I recently tried the Jack Daniels Green Label, and it is said to be a step lower than the black label but tastes better in my humble opinion.

Therefore it is natural for me to believe after wanting to try Gentlemen Jack for years that this would be one of my favorite liquors. I bought the 750 mL, turned to my good friends, and said: “On Tuesday, the rounds are on me!” Our group gathered around our usual meeting place, popped open this beautiful bottle, and dove right into the review which is what we shall do here as the bottle of Gentlemen’s Jack says not a word. So without further ado:

Taste: 7 – Ah the taste of Jack Daniels is once again a polarizing taste; however this is much more positive than negative compared to its relative. The taste is not offensively sweet and there is a bit of smoky taste as well but it is like they are competing. I find this to be rather good and the score reflects this.

Aftertaste: 8.1 – This is where the whisky really shows its stuff! This is reminiscent of scotch and it fills the back of your mouth with a nice woody taste which lingers but you wouldn’t want it to go away anyways.

Burn/Smooth: 7.6 – Nice smoothness, no burn just warmness. Most whiskies have a real burn. This is the gentleman of whiskies as it does not wish to pry upon your taste buds and throat with burn.

Aroma: 6.875 – It’s a nice sweet smell, but it stays there and tickles your nose.

Honesty: 8.8 – The display quality of this bottle is just fantastic. It’s a nice shape, there’s no cork but the cap is legitimately good and tough. No text, no wank, and the raised lettering around it is nice. This is a serious bottle, and being called Gentlemen Jack is great.  I want this front and center of any cabinet.

Mixability: 6.75

Whisky on the Rocks: 8 – Takes the little bit of bite there off, and really brings out the taste. Superb!

Whisky and Coke: 5.5 – It’s almost completely hidden, which isn’t a good thing. You want the whisky to shine, yet it hides in the cola. Stop mixing this with anything but ice.

Value: 4.9 – What you pay is what you get. I got this on sale so suck it! If you ever get $5 or more off then I would suggest you give your $20-$25 to buying this booze…even if it is all you have for food.

Final Thoughts:

“It improves on the Jackie D recipe, but not enough that I’d get this over other whiskies.  Not the be all end all, but it is good whisky.” – Others Less Amazing Than William Henri Neve IV

I am drinking another glass right now. This is fantastic on the rocks and if you say anything bad about this I will come to your house and beat your with a cudgel with nails in it as I drink a delicious glass of this. But as the others said…there is probably better whisky out there but I cannot think of a better American Whiskey. Gentlemen, this is Gentleman Jack!

It has been written, so it must be. Science has proven it.
